By how you work, from the makers' own prices:
This comparison sits under our wider best YouTube thumbnail makers ranking and uses the same rule as our YouTube tools guide: price per thing you actually make beats headline price. Once the maker is chosen, the thumbnail fonts matrix covers what goes on the image.
US$47.99 billed yearly with 100 AI credits a month; billed monthly it is US$10.99. Fotor says unused credits roll over for up to five months while you stay subscribed.

Canva, Picsart and Fotor read on each maker's own page, 25 October 2026; Snappa, 26 October 2026. US dollars, excluding tax. Canva's monthly prices were not shown (Yearly toggle selected). Per-thumbnail columns are computed here: monthly price divided by 4 or by 12.
Billing yearly saves 64% on Fotor Pro, 76% on Pro+ and 72% on Max, against 30% on Picsart Pro and 20% on Picsart Ultra. The gap is large enough that a monthly-billed Fotor Pro ($10.99) costs about what Picsart Pro ($10.50) and Canva Pro ($12) cost billed yearly, so a reader who will not commit to a year gives up most of Fotor's price lead.
Fotor's page also shows promotional markings on its higher tiers (Pro+ at US$5.83 a month "30% OFF" from US$8.33, Max at US$13.99 "Special Offer 30% OFF" from US$19.99) on 25 October 2026. Those are the maker's own promotions and can end without notice; the figures above are the prices shown that day.
Canva counts AI in uses (up to 20 on Free, then "10x" and "20x" that on Pro and Business), Fotor counts credits per month (100, 300 and 1,000), and the price per credit falls fast as you move up Fotor's tiers: $3.99 per 100 credits on Pro, $1.94 on Pro+ and $1.40 on Max, billed yearly.
Credits go much faster on video than on stills. Fotor's page lists AI video models at about 20 credits per five seconds for Seedance 2.0 Mini and about 75 for FLUX 3 Video, and says Max's 1,000 credits are about 66 Nano Banana Pro images or about 28 Seedance 2.0 videos. For stills-only thumbnail work, the entry allowance is the part to compare.
YouTube Help currently recommends a 3840 x 2160 thumbnail for videos (minimum width 640 pixels), in JPG or PNG, at a 16:9 aspect ratio, with a 2 MB limit when you upload from the mobile app and 50 MB from desktop. That is newer than the figure many guides repeat: Canva's own thumbnail page still tells readers thumbnails are 1280 x 720 pixels with a 2 MB maximum, which was read on 26 October 2026.
So the export setting that matters is the largest 16:9 size your maker allows, then a file-size check before you upload from a phone. YouTube Help, "Add video thumbnails and Shorts cover images" carries the full list.
BEFORE YOU UPLOAD (YouTube Help, read 26 Oct 2026) [ ] 16:9 for a video thumbnail (9:16 for a Short) [ ] Resolution: YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160; minimum width 640 px [ ] Format: JPG or PNG [ ] Size: under 2 MB if you upload from the YouTube mobile app; up to 50 MB from desktop [ ] Shrink the image to phone-feed size and confirm the face or object and the text still read [ ] Export from your maker at the largest 16:9 size it allows, then check the file size [ ] Name the file after the video so you can find it in 6 months
Canva Free costs nothing and includes one Brand Kit with three colours, up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses, 5 GB of storage and 1.6M+ templates, per Canva's pricing page on 25 October 2026. Canva's background remover says you can try it with "a limited number of free high-resolution downloads", with unlimited ones on a paid plan.
Fotor's background remover says it is "free to use with no sign up needed". Snappa's free Starter plan allows 3 downloads a month, which covers a thumbnail a week for three weeks of the month. Picsart's free plan was not read, so we do not describe it.
Snappa is the plainest alternative: a template tool with a US$10 a month yearly price (US$15 monthly) and no AI credits listed, read on 26 October 2026 at snappa.com/pricing. Adobe Express is the other name readers ask about: on our last confirmed read, 14 October 2026, its Premium plan was US$9.99 a month at adobe.com/express/pricing, but Adobe's page returned an error to our fetcher on 26 October, so we have not re-read it and do not rank it.
We compared Canva, Picsart and Fotor on the prices and plan features each maker shows on its own pricing page, read in a live browser on 25 October 2026, and on YouTube Help's thumbnail page, Snappa's pricing page and the Canva and Fotor background-remover pages, read on 26 October 2026. The cost-per-thumbnail finding is computed from the cost table on this page (monthly price divided by 4 uploads, then by 12). We did not design or A/B test thumbnails in these tools, and Picsart's monthly AI credits (animated counters on its page) and Canva's monthly-billing prices were not read, so they are left out rather than estimated. Prices exclude tax and the makers' own promotions can change them.

It can be. Canva Free is US$0 and includes one Brand Kit, up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses, 5 GB of storage and 1.6M+ templates, per Canva's pricing page on 25 October 2026. Canva's background remover offers only a limited number of free high-resolution downloads.
YouTube Help recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos at a 16:9 aspect ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, in JPG or PNG. File size is limited to 2 MB when uploading from the mobile app and 50 MB from desktop.
Fotor's yearly prices are 64% (Pro), 76% (Pro+) and 72% (Max) below its monthly prices; Picsart's are 30% (Pro) and 20% (Ultra) below. Canva's monthly prices were not shown on the page we read.
Yes, all three list AI features. Canva counts AI in uses (up to 20 on Free), Fotor in monthly credits (100, 300 or 1,000 on Pro, Pro+ and Max), and Picsart lists unlimited image generations with Flex.2 Klein plus credits-based AI video models.
Snappa is a template-first tool: its free Starter plan allows 3 downloads a month and Pro is US$10 a month billed yearly (US$15 monthly) with unlimited downloads, custom font uploads and background removal, per its pricing page on 26 October 2026.
Pick the maker by your upload rate and your team, not by the headline plan name. On the makers' own prices, Fotor Pro is the cheapest paid route for a weekly uploader at $1.00 per thumbnail billed yearly, Canva Pro is the pick when brand kits are shared, and Picsart Pro suits photo-heavy batches; whichever you choose, export at YouTube's current 16:9 recommendation of 3840 x 2160 and check the file size before you upload.
